General manager Nolan Teasley and head coach Kevin O’Connell have officially locked in the initial 53-man roster for the Vikings 2026 season.

The final breakdown sits at 26 offensive players, 24 defensive players, and three specialists.

While the foundational stars are locked in, this roster is anything but predictable. O’Connell and Teasley threw some massive curveballs that have the entire fan base talking.

The Offense: 7 New Additions

Quarterbacks (4)

The Room: Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz, J.J. McCarthy, Max Brosmer

The Surprise: Keeping four quarterbacks on an active roster is virtually unheard of in the modern NFL.

Despite endless media rumors that J.J. McCarthy might be on the trade block or even left off the roster entirely after a brutal training camp, management refused to give up on him.

Add in undrafted rookie Max Brosmer—who somehow survived the cut despite major preseason struggles—and it’s clear the front office was terrified of losing their young signal-callers to the waiver wire.

The Room: Aaron Jones Sr., Jordan Mason, Demond Claiborne, Max Bredeson (FB)

The Surprise: The axe fell hard on Zavier Scott, who had a phenomenal camp push but ultimately lost the numbers game.

Instead, the coaching staff opted for a leaner room, trusting Demond Claiborne to lock down the true RB3 spot behind Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason.

Wide Receivers (6)

The Room: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jauan Jennings, Tai Felton, Myles Price, Dillon Bell

The Surprise: Carrying six wideouts is a luxury given how thin the team is elsewhere.

The feel-good story here is undrafted free agent Dillon Bell, who completely shattered expectations, caught fire during the preseason, and forced the coaches to give him a highly coveted roster spot.

Tight Ends (4)

The Room: T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, Benjamin Yurosek, Gavin Bartholomew

The Surprise: Almost every analyst expected a straight-up camp battle between rookies Benjamin Yurosek and Gavin Bartholomew for a single roster spot.

Instead, the Vikings blindsided everyone by keeping both. O’Connell is clearly prioritizing maximum schematic flexibility over standard roster balance.

Offensive Line (8)

The Room: Christian Darrisaw, Brian O’Neill, Blake Brandel, Will Fries, Donovan Jackson, Joe Huber, Ryan Van Demark, Caleb Tiernan

The Surprise: This unit got shaken up right at the deadline.

The front office shipped 2024 sixth-round pick Walter Rouse to the Patriots. To make matters worse, backup center Michael Jurgens was placed on short-term IR. Leaving themselves with only eight active blockers is an incredibly risky move.

AThe Defense: 7 New Additions

Defensive Line (6)

The Room: Jalen Redmond, Levi Drake Rodriguez, Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, Caleb Banks, Domonique Orange, Elijah Williams

The Surprise: The youth movement is officially here, and it claimed veteran Isaiahh Loudermilk as its main casualty.

Elijah Williams pulled off the improbable, defying the odds to make the final cut for the second year in a row over more seasoned league veterans.

Outside Linebackers / Edge (4)

The Room: Andrew Van Ginkel, Dallas Turner, Bo Richter, Chaz Chambliss

The Surprise: Disaster struck right before the deadline when rookie Tyler Batty suffered a season-ending ACL tear.

His injury leaves the edge-rushing group dangerously thin at just four players. Expect the Vikings to be incredibly aggressive on the waiver wire for veteran help this week.

Inside Linebackers (4)

The Room: Blake Cashman, Ivan Pace Jr., Eric Wilson, Jake Golday

The Surprise: The rumor mill was spinning out of control last weekend, with some suggesting Ivan Pace Jr. could be a shock cut.

The coaching staff completely blocked out the noise, keeping Pace exactly where he belongs—as a valuable special teams ace.

Cornerbacks (5)

The Room: Byron Murphy Jr., Isaiah Rodgers, Zemaiah Vaughn, Charles Demmings, James Pierre

The Surprise: This secondary has a completely fresh face.

Zemaiah Vaughn turned heads by making the cut over several local fan favorites, proving that the defensive staff heavily favored his raw physical traits and aggressive practice tape.

Safeties (5)

The Room: Josh Metellus, Theo Jackson, Jay Ward, Jacob Thomas, Jacobe Thomas

The Surprise: Say hello to the biggest underdog story of the summer.

Undrafted rookie Jacob Thomas went from an absolute long shot to a roster lock by posting an elite PFF score north of 85 in every single preseason game.

Special Teams: 1 New Addition

Specialists (3)

The Room: Will Reichard (K), Brett Thorson (P), Andrew DePaola (LS)

The Surprise: The Vikings chose youth over experience in a brutal punting battle, releasing longtime veteran Johnny Hekker and handing the reins completely over to rookie Brett Thorson.

This roster raises some serious questions.

Is a QB Trade Brewing?

Keeping four active quarterbacks is a massive, high-stakes gamble.

By hoarding McCarthy and Brosmer to keep them off waivers, the team explicitly sacrificed urgent depth at both offensive line and edge.

You have to wonder: Are the Vikings actively shopping one of these quarterbacks to recoup draft capital or line depth?

If so, don’t be surprised to see something happen in the coming days.

Expect a Heavy, Physical Run Game

Hoarding four tight ends caught everyone off guard.

By keeping both rookie tight ends alongside Hockenson and Oliver, O’Connell is bucking standard NFL roster construction. Does this mean the Vikings are pivoting to a much heavier, smash-mouth personnel strategy to run the ball more? It certainly looks like it.

New Additions Keep Piling Up

The Minnesota Vikings are no strangers to roster turnover.

Over the past couple of years, the team has totaled 49 additions. With the addition of 15 more players this year, the Vikings have now added 64 new players over the past three years.

That’s a staggering amount of turnover—and it says a lot about how aggressively this front office is reshaping the roster.
