Monday Morning Optimism: Why Kyler Murray Gives Vikings Fans Plenty to Believe In

Kyler Murray has given Vikings fans plenty to talk about this offseason, and after everything we’ve seen so far, there’s still plenty of reason for optimism heading into 2026.

Two years ago, I was playing in a poker game with some friends in late August when the topic of Fantasy Football came up in conversation. I didn’t contribute much to the discussion, but rather vaguely listened as all the armchair experts gave their takes on how the upcoming season would play out.

It wasn’t until the name Justin Jefferson was brought up that my ears perked up and I became particularly interested in the conversation. After all, he was my favorite player, and I had watched every snap of his career up to that point, so I felt like I had more than enough knowledge to contribute.

The topic of Jefferson quickly soured on me, though. Everyone at the table seemed to agree that the receiver was inevitably going to have the worst season of his career.

Continuing to listen, I soon realized that the pessimism toward the Vikings All-Pro wasn’t really about his skills or anything to do with him at all. It was about who would be throwing him the ball.

A few months earlier, the Vikings had signed quarterback Sam Darnold, a former first-round pick turned journeyman who was slated to be the team’s starting signal caller. As it turned out, it wasn’t just a few amateur poker players who lacked confidence in Darnold’s abilities. The majority of the national media had the same opinion.

Darnold starting for the Vikings wasn’t supposed to be anything special. In the best-case scenario, he was viewed as an average quarterback who could maybe lead the team to eight or nine wins.

But what happened that season was nothing short of spectacular.

Although the season was rocky at times and didn’t end the way Vikings fans wanted, it was a year filled with great moments, phenomenal coaching, and great quarterback play from a player who possessed a great deal of talent and unlocked potential.

Fast-forward to the present day, and I can’t help but draw comparisons to the beginning of that 2024 season.

Among media pundits and fans alike, there is plenty of chatter that Kyler Murray, the Vikings’ current starting quarterback, is overrated or washed up. The terms immature and uncommitted have also been used to describe him.

Personally, I find it a little ridiculous that, as Vikings fans, we are already doubting Kyler Murray and his ability to be successful in Minnesota when we have a coaching staff that has proven it can get the most out of the quarterbacks who play for them.

And although Murray and Darnold are very different players, there is certainly an argument to be made that Kyler possesses a better overall skill set than Darnold did when he arrived in Minnesota.

Murray also has a strong résumé. He was named Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 and has accomplished plenty throughout his career, all while playing for an extremely dysfunctional franchise in Arizona.

I’m not saying the Vikings are going to win 14 games this season. I’m not even saying Kyler Murray is going to have the type of season Sam Darnold had in 2024.

I’m simply saying there is a little more room for optimism than what the fan base currently seems to have.

We’ve seen this story before.

A quarterback arrives in Minnesota with plenty of questions surrounding him. The national media doubts him. Fans question whether he can succeed. And then Kevin O’Connell and his coaching staff get to work.

Maybe Kyler Murray works out. Maybe he doesn’t.

But before we rush to judgment, I think Vikings fans owe this KOC and K1 experiment a real chance.

So, here’s to a little Monday morning optimism.
